Sometimes, rarely, a perfect tweet is fired off. Joe Staley needed just five words to sum up the 49ers' ugly first half Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.
Every 49ers fan was wondering the same thing as San Francisco's former star left tackle, and probably had a few harsher expletives. The first half went about as bad as possible for the 49ers in their Week 5 matchup as they went to the locker room down 30-7 against the one-win Dolphins.
Cornerback Brian Allen, who recently was promoted from the practice squad, spent the first half getting burned by Dolphins receivers and earning costly penalties. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was just as bad.
Garoppolo was supposed to be San Francisco's savior as he returned from a high ankle sprain. Instead, he looked nowhere near ready and was throwing the ball up for grabs. Garoppolo went 7-for-17 in the first half for 77 yards and was intercepted twice.
He was replaced by quarterback C.J. Beathard after halftime. Coach Kyle Shanahan said it was as a precaution to protect Garoppolo. The QB was sacked three times in the first half.
