Kelly: No plan to get Ponder playing time

SANTA CLARA – Quarterback Colin Kaepernick will make his 11th consecutive start to finish the regular season on Sunday.

Coach Chip Kelly said there is no plan to get backup Christian Ponder into the 49ers’ season finale against the Seattle Seahawks at Levi’s Stadium.

“We’re trying to go win a football game,” Kelly said on Thursday. “Kap will play unless he gets banged up.”

Ponder supplanted Blaine Gabbert as the backup quarterback two weeks ago when the 49ers faced the Atlanta Falcons. Ponder has yet to appear in a game this season and he has not seen action in a regular-season game since the 2014 season while with the Minnesota Vikings.

Gabbert started the first five games of the season and served as the backup for the next eight games. He replaced Kaepernick at the beginning of the fourth quarter of the 49ers’ Dec. 4 game at the Chicago Bears. Kaepernick was back in the starting lineup the following week.

Kaepernick has completed 57.7 percent of his pass attempts this season for 2,026 yards for the league’s lowest-ranked passing attack. He has thrown 15 touchdowns and four interceptions with a passer rating of 88.2.

Kaepernick is expected to opt out of his contract to become an unrestricted free agent before the start of the new league year in March.
