Kyle Shanahan bemoans 49ers' mistakes, but he'll gladly take Week 1 win

TAMPA, Fla. -- Yes, the 49ers won their first game of the 2019 NFL season, but coach Kyle Shanahan left Raymond James Stadium knowing they still have plenty of work to do.

And he'll let his players know it.

"It's fun to win when you can still be hard on the guys the next day," Shanahan said Sunday after the 49ers' 31-17 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. "There's lots of stuff on that tape that could have cost us the game in all three phases.

"Very rarely is it perfect, and I was very disappointed with that, but to still be able to pull out a win says a lot about the guys we got in there, how important it was to them how hard they were fighting. They weren't looking to make excuses or to blame anyone. They all just kept grinding, and when you do that, usually good things happen."

Good things happened on defense, as the 49ers generated four turnovers, but the offense gave away the ball twice. Another problem was penalties, with three San Francisco touchdowns called back after flags were thrown, and 11 total infractions costing the 49ers 87 yards in field position.

“We didn’t play our best ball today, but the guys played very hard,” Shanahan said. “... Just a lot of self-inflicted wounds that we weren’t proud of. But for the guys to still battle and fight and come up with that win just shows how hard the guys fought, especially in this heat.”

That heat particularly affected three players -- running back Matt Breida, defensive back K’Waun Williams and kicker Robbie Gould -- who were sidelined during the game because of hydration issues, although all eventually returned.

Jimmy Garoppolo didn’t play his best, completing 18 of 27 passes for just 166 yards and one touchdown with one interception in his first regular-season start after ACL surgery. The 49ers' ground game also struggled, with all three running backs combining for 100 yards on 30 carries.

Shanahan put some of the onus for those offensive issues on himself.

“I think the whole offense was shaky,” the coach said. “I think he made a couple of good throws, but Jimmy and everyone else, including myself, needs to get a lot more consistent. There are some things out there that we missed, which made it a much tighter game than it needed to be."

The process of fixing those issues starts this coming week in Youngstown, Ohio, where the 49ers will practice in preparation for their Week 2 clash with the Cincinnati Bengals.
