Norman expected to be ready for banged-up 49ers in Week 2

DETROIT — With the health of Jason Verrett in doubt, Josh Norman is expected to be in the 49ers' lineup for Week 2 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Six days after signing a one-year contract with the 49ers, the veteran cornerback is a much-needed addition to the roster. Coach Kyle Shanahan said that the fear is that Verrett sustained an ACL injury in the San Francisco's 41-33 win over the Detroit Lions at Ford Field on Sunday.

While the return of Emmanuel Moseley from a hamstring injury is a possibility, Norman is a viable option to start in Philadelphia.

“He was definitely ready to go,” Shanahan said. “Josh told us, he actually said if we tell him today that he’s up, he’ll be ready to go. So Josh has been a soldier all week and I’m really excited to have him here. I know he was ready this week, so I expect him to be ready next week also.”

Shanahan and general manager John Lynch could be searching the open market for other options, but still have a slight sliver of hope that it is not truly an ACL injury for Verrett.

“I’m not sure,” Shanahan said, “We do have the numbers. We’re always looking at everything every week. Still keeping my fingers crossed on Verrett but that’s something we’ll look into here probably tonight, tomorrow and Tuesday.”

Behind Moseley and Verrett on the depth chart are veteran Dontae Johnson, as well as rookies Demmodore Lenoir and Ambry Thomas. While Lenoir has shown a lot of promise in training camp and through the preseason, the group could use the veteran leadership of a player like Norman.

The one-time All-Pro could end up being a valuable signing for the 49ers this season.
