SANTA CLARA — Matt Breida left a game with an injury again, and it might be time for the 49ers to shut down the running back for the rest of the season.

In the third quarter of Sunday's meeting with the Chicago Bears, the 49ers officially ruled him, along with wide receiver Dante Pettis and tight end Garrett Celek, out for the game.

Breida, who has been dealing with a lingering ankle injury for most of the season, was injured early in the second quarter. On his fourth carry of the game, Breida was bent backwards in an awkward position and was slow to get up from the Levi's Stadium turf.

Breida walked to the sideline under his own power to the blue injury tent, but he was taken to the 49ers' locker room shortly after.

The team announced that Breida was questionable to return with an ankle injury, but they didn’t seem to be looking at his ankle when they were examining him on the field.

Breida had four carries for 20 yards before leaving the game. He has 149 carries for 794 yards, and 26 receptions for 255 yards on the season.

Undrafted free agent Jeff Wilson Jr. will take over in the backfield. Matthew Dayes also is active for the game, but Alfred Morris is not.
