What oddsmakers believe 49ers' chances are of Stafford trade

Matthew Stafford's days in Detroit appear to be done.

The Lions reportedly have agreed to part ways with the former No. 1 overall draft pick. The question is, where will the veteran quarterback play next?

There are sure to be a long line of suitors for Stafford, despite the fact that he will turn 33 years old next month. Stafford battled injuries for yet another bad Lions team and still threw for more than 4,000 passing yards this season. Any win-now team should want to add his arm talent, including the 49ers.

The 49ers have the third-best odds to acquire Stafford at +450 (a $100 bet would win you $450), courtesy of odds provided by our partner, PointsBet (Colorado). The New England Patriots (+350) and the Indianapolis Colts (+250) are the two teams ahead of San Francisco.

It definitely makes sense why the Patriots and the Colts would be ahead of the 49ers. First of all, the Lions wouldn't want to see Stafford in the NFC after trading him. Sending him to New England or Indianapolis would get the QB to the AFC and out of their sights.

The Colts could be a QB away from being Super Bowl contenders after Philip Rivers announced his retirement, and the Patriots still won seven games despite rough QB play from Cam Newton and a handful of New England's top defensive players opting out of the season. Having Bill Belichick at the helm helps, too.

The 49ers made it all the way to the Super Bowl last season with Jimmy Garoppolo under center, and Stafford feels like an immediate upgrade. Garoppolo has had trouble staying healthy ever since the 49ers signed him to a $137.5 million contract, and he simply doesn't have the arm strength that Stafford does.

If the 49ers could acquire Stafford, they instantly would be seen as NFC contenders again. Stafford sure feels like the star QB most likely to move this offseason, and 49ers general manager John Lynch is sure to follow every Stafford rumor, real or not.
