Purdy-Hurts duel will be rematch of epic college clash

Sunday's NFC Championship Game matchup between the 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field won't be the first time quarterbacks Brock Purdy and Jalen Hurts have faced off against one another.

Purdy and Hurts famously went toe-to-toe in a 2019 college game between Iowa State and the University of Oklahoma in which the two quarterbacks combined for 678 total yards and 11 total touchdowns in a thrilling 42-41 win for the Sooners over the Cyclones.

Fans will be in for a treat if Sunday's conference title game is anything like the college matchup three years ago.

In speaking to reporters on Monday, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni, who is good friends with Iowa State coach Matt Campbell, was asked what he saw from Purdy throughout his college career with the Cyclones.

"Just that he's a winner," Sirianni said. "Obviously, I always follow Iowa State and their program because I have so many college teammates and roommates that coach there."

Purdy's improbable rise from "Mr. Irrelevant" to starting NFL quarterback certainly has put Iowa State back on the map and a win against a former college foe on Sunday will put the former Cyclone one win away from accomplishing something that no rookie quarterback in NFL history has done -- win a Super Bowl.

"Every game that Brock Purdy plays well in, I think that's good for recruiting classes at Iowa State," Sirianni joked. "I do remember watching that game and both quarterbacks really played well."
