NFL rumors: 49ers believed to have Trent Williams trade interest

The 49ers currently are without any picks in the second through fourth rounds, so they are not expected to be very active on Day 2 of the 2020 NFL Draft on Friday night. That said, there are potential moves to be made that don't involve the selection of prospects, and within the opening picks of the second round, San Francisco was already connected to an intriguing rumor.

NBC Sports Washington's Julie Donaldson reported Friday that the 49ers are believed to be the NFC team interested in Washington offensive tackle Trent Williams, citing sources.

Williams, 31, is entering the final year of his contract and will carry a cap hit of $14.5 million in 2020. As Donaldson mentioned, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was Washington's offensive coordinator when they selected Williams with the No. 4 overall pick of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Selected to the Pro Bowl seven straight seasons from 2012 to 2018, Williams sat out all of last season while in a contract dispute. When healthy, he is one of the best offensive linemen in the entire league.

From a talent standpoint, there's no question as to why the 49ers might have interest in Williams, but as things currently stand, there doesn't appear to be a good fit depending on what expectations are for Joe Staley. While San Francisco's actions in the first round Thursday seemed to indicate Staley's return is expected in 2020, there has been no such confirmation up to this point.

If Staley, 35, returns for a 14th NFL season, he and Mike McGlinchey will occupy both starting tackle spots. But, if for whatever reason the 49ers aren't confident in his ability to protect Jimmy Garoppolo's blind side -- or if Staley retires -- a trade for Williams might make a lot of sense, depending on the price.
