Report: Jimmy G won't throw for 16 weeks after shoulder surgery

It appears that Jimmy Garoppolo's tenure with the 49ers is coming to an end sooner rather than later.

Whichever team trades for him, though, will have to wait until summer to see him throwing to any potential new teammates. Tuesday afternoon, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported, citing sources, that Garoppolo will undergo surgery to repair a should injury he sustained in the playoffs.

NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported shortly after that Garoppolo's surgery will repair a torn capsule and will prevent him from throwing for 16 weeks after the surgery.

"It's a complicated situation between Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers," Rapoport said on NFL Total Access. "It is clear that Trey Lance is their starter for the future, that was evident really all throughout last year despite Jimmy G starting and playing well.

"He, I am told, needs shoulder surgery to repair a torn capsule in his throwing shoulder, his right shoulder. That is at least a significant rehab situation. He is not going to be able to throw, according to sources, for about 16 weeks. If you go forward with the timeline that takes you to about late June and then he has to get ready for the season and build up strength and make sure the shoulder can withstand hits and build up velocity and all of that."

Not exactly a rosy outlook if you're a team wanting to trade for a starting quarterback.

Rapoport does confirm what Schefter originally reported, claiming that interest is significant despite the uncertainty surrounding the injury.

"Yes, the belief as of now is that he will be ready for the start of the season," Rapoport added. "But if you are a team that wants to trade for Garoppolo -- and interest is significant -- it will take at least a leap of faith and some very real and precise medical information to make this trade. It's not unprecedented, Drew Brees was traded despite major shoulder surgery but it is at least something teams need to be aware of and investigate."

General manager John Lynch joined Good Morning Football on Wednesday morning, where he revealed that both the 49ers and Garoppolo did not know he would end up needing surgery.

"We didn't know it and I don't think Jimmy knew it," Lynch told NFL Network's Peter Schrager. "I think he's made a decision here in the last couple of days. He had an injury in that Dallas game, he was dealing with a couple of things, his thumb. Which, my goodness, my admiration (for him)."

Fortunately for the 49ers, it appears that Garoppolo's trade market remains fruitful despite the looming recovery ahead for the 30-year-old quarterback.

What San Francisco will get in return for a player in Garoppolo's position remains to be seen.
