Witherspoon fell out of favor with coach Kyle Shanahan the past few seasons. He showed glimpses of the skill set that always excited the 49ers but couldn't stay consistent and also dealt with a handful of injuries. Witherspoon did have an 80.2 Pro Football Focus grade last season.

Witherspoon had one tackle and pass defensed against the Seahawks in Week 17 but also allowed one touchdown in a three-point loss.
