If the 49ers trade for Matthew Stafford, it reportedly could happen within the next few days.
NBC Sports NFL analyst Peter King reported Saturday, citing two people in the loop, that the Detroit Lions could agree in principle to trade Stafford by Tuesday or even earlier.

As King notes, any trade involving Stafford won't become official until the new NFL league year begins on March 17.
The rumors surrounding a potential Stafford trade have picked up in recent days. New Lions coach Dan Campbell told The Detroit Free Press that they have received "quite a few offers" for the former No. 1 overall draft pick and that talks are "hot and heavy."
NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reported on Jan. 23 that San Francisco was expected to have interest in the 12-year pro.

MMQB's Albert Breer also reported Saturday that the 49ers are "solidly" pursuing Stafford.
It's unclear what the 49ers or any other team would have to give up to get Stafford, who turns 33 years old next week, but King reported on Jan. 25 that it could cost San Francisco incumbent starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and a 2022 second-round draft pick.

Stafford wouldn't be the long-term solution for the 49ers given his age, but he would fit an immediate need for improved play at the quarterback position. In 16 games this past season, he completed 339 of 528 passes for 4,084 yards and 26 touchdowns, and he was intercepted 10 times.
It sounds like the Stafford trade talks are winding down, and soon the 49ers will know if they've acquired their quarterback for the next few seasons or if they need to pivot in another direction.
