With less than an hour until the start of the 2021 NFL Draft, there continues to be plenty of speculation surrounding the 49ers’ selection with the No. 3 overall pick.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, most general managers in the league think the 49ers will draft Trey Lance.
All ye Mac Jones haters, rejoice.
As Rapoport noted, this is all speculation until NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announces the pick on the microphone. But most figure 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch are deciding between Lance, Jones and Justin Fields -- so long as Trevor Lawrence or Zach Wilson doesn’t fall into their lap.
In the 34 days since the 49ers moved up from the No. 12 spot to the No. 3 spot via trade with the Miami Dolphins, it has been a roller coaster of speculation.
At long last, we will finally know the answer soon enough. By the time this story is published, there will probably be another “favorite” to be picked at No. 3, but let the record show that in 11th hour, Rapoport’s sources indicate Lance is the pick.
In Lance, Shanahan would have a quarterback with the tools to fit in today’s evolving game where mobile quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes, Kyler Murray, Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen are making major moves.
