Report: 49ers won't pull early plug on Lance with Jimmy G lurking

When Jimmy Garoppolo agreed to a massive pay cut to stay with the 49ers, speculation arose about the front office not having full trust in quarterback Trey Lance.

However, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Sunday, citing sources, that the 49ers won’t pull the plug on Lance’s status as the starting quarterback if he endures early struggles.

“While some quarterbacks with prominent or interesting backups face a short leash, Lance doesn't have one, sources informed of the team's QB plans say," Rapoport and Pelissero reported. "This is his team, and he is the starting quarterback."

Garoppolo will be standing on the sidelines Sunday as Lance begins his first full season as the 49ers' starting quarterback.

Lance, though, is confident that he will benefit from Garoppolo's presence in the locker room.

“I’ve said it a million times, but he truly has been a big brother to me,” Lance said of Garoppolo on the "49ers Talk" podcast. “And just his knowledge of the game, his advice on and off the field … I’m 22 [years old], so I’m going to continue to learn as much as I can, every rep, on and off the field.”
