Jimmy Garoppolo faced scrutiny all offseason, and it carried over into the 49ers' 2020 NFL season opener Sunday at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.
Garoppolo missed several passes late in the 49ers' 24-20 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, including a potential touchdown pass to Kendrick Bourne with just over a minute left in the game.
Instead, Garoppolo floated the pass, allowing Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson to break it up.
Then, on the 49ers' final offensive play, Garoppolo's pass intended for Trent Taylor was broken up, sealing the Cardinals' stunning win.
Garoppolo completed 19 of 33 passes for 259 yards and two touchdowns, but he didn't look good at several different points during the loss.
49ers Twitter didn't handle Garoppolo's performance well.
Until Garoppolo can prove he can make the throws it takes to win games, he's going to continue to face criticism. If his performance doesn't improve over the next few weeks, the outside noise is going to grow louder and he might not be able to overcome it.
