Shanahan sticks with Mullens as 49ers' starting QB vs. Cowboys

Nick Mullens will remain the 49ers' starting quarterback for at least another week.

Coach Kyle Shanahan announced Mullens will get his eighth start of the season for the 49ers in their Week 15 game against the Dallas Cowboys.

"I plan on Nick starting," Shanahan said Wednesday. "We'll always see what goes on in practice, but Nick's the guy who we'll start out with and we'll see how it goes."

C.J. Beathard has not started a game since Week 8 of the 2018 season.

Mullens has started seven games this season in place of Jimmy Garoppolo, who has been sidelined on two separate occasions this season due to high ankle sprains. Mullens started the past five games with Beathard serving as the backup after Garoppolo was placed on injured reserve.

The final three games of the season could be important for the 49ers' offseason decision-making, as the organization must determine how it wants to handle its quarterback situation in the offseason.

Beathard is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, while Mullens is scheduled to be a restricted free agent. Mullens originally signed with the 49ers as an undrafted rookie from Southern Mississippi in 2017. He spent his entire rookie season on the practice squad.

Mullens has completed 65.5 percent of his passes this season (190 of 290) for 2,218 yards with 10 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His passer rating is 85.7.

Mullens threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown and had a fumble returned for a touchdown in the 49ers' 23-15 loss to Washington on Sunday.

Beathard has appeared in three games this season. He has completed 23 of 38 attempts (60.5 percent) for 232 yards with one touchdown and has not been intercepted.

The 49ers selected Beathard in the third round (No. 104 overall) of the 2017 draft. Beathard was a two-year starter at Iowa.

He started five games in 2018 after Garoppolo sustained a season-ending knee injury. The 49ers did not win any of his starts. Beathard completed 60.4 percent of his passes with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Mullens took over as the 49ers' starter in the middle of the season and played well enough to hold onto the job as the team's No. 2 quarterback behind Garoppolo in 2019.
