People on Twitter never forget. And if they do, they’ll just dig up the old tweets anyways.
Rumors have been swirling around Deshaun Watson since Thursday morning, when Pro Football Talk' Mike Florio tweeted that Watson could seek a trade away from the Houston Texans.
The 49ers were quickly pegged by many to be a logical destination. Once the Twitter sleuths get going, you never know what they’ll find. It didn’t take long for some old tweets from Watson to surface, showing his love of the 49ers during the Jim Harbaugh era.
Back on Nov. 13, 2011, the 49ers topped the New York Giants, 27-20, to move their record to 8-1 in Harbaugh’s first year as coach. Count Watson among the 49ers Faithful at the time.
Watson also was rooting for the guys in red and gold during Super Bowl XLVIII, when the 49ers mounted a second-half comeback against the Ravens but fell short in their quest for a sixth Lombardi trophy.
NFL players -- ones not named George Kittle, anyway -- seem to lose their fan allegiances once they reach the league. But this at least gives us a glimpse into what Watson was thinking as a teenager when he was just a fan of the league.
Watson is only 25 and one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks. Jimmy Garoppolo stands as the team’s most likely in-house option to start under center in 2021. Still, generational talents like Watson don’t become available very often and the 49ers should see if he’d like to play for the team he used to root for.
