Report: Pendergast expected to leave 49ers for USC job

SANTA CLARA –- With one game remaining in the season, 49ers defensive coordinator Eric Mangini figures the members of the team’s coaching staff will not have to wait long to learn of their fates.

“I’ve been through that a few times,” Mangini said Thursday of being a coach in some degree of limbo at the end of the season.

The 49ers (4-11) wrap up the regular season on Sunday against the St. Louis Rams at Levi’s Stadium. And until CEO Jed York speaks, there are no official assurances head coach Jim Tomsula or anybody else on his staff will return next season.

“Typically you find out what happens pretty quickly,” Mangini said. “So, limbo’s not. . . we’ll have some guidance with that I’m sure fairly soon after the season ends.”

At least some changes on the 49ers’ coaching staff are expected. One assistant who is reportedly likely to leave the organization is linebackers coach Clancy Pendergast.

Pendergast “will probably accept” an offer to rejoin USC’s coaching staff as defensive coordinator on Clay Helton’s staff, sources told the Los Angeles Daily News. Pendergast held the same position in 2013. He is also reportedly in the mix for the LSU defensive coordinator position, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported.
