Richard Sherman took full responsibility for the events that led to his arrest this week in the Seattle area in a statement the star cornerback released Friday.

Sherman, 33, who remains a free agent after spending the past three seasons with the 49ers, promised to get the help he needs in order to deal with mental health issues.

“I am deeply remorseful for my actions on Tuesday night,” Sherman wrote in a statement. “I behaved in a manner I am not proud of. I have been dealing with some personal challenges over the last several months, but that is not an excuse for how I acted. The importance of mental and emotional health is extremely real and I vow to get the help I need.

“I appreciate all of the people who have reached out in support of me and my family, including our community here in Seattle. I am grateful to have such an amazing wife, family and support system to lean on during this time.

Ashley Sherman, Richard's wife, told police investigators that Sherman "does not remember anything about it the next day" whenever he has an episode such as the one he experienced this week, according to the police report.

Sherman faces five non-felony charges stemming from incidents that occurred early Wednesday morning.

The King County Prosecutor’s Office announced Friday that Sherman faces five charges:

—Driving under the influence of alcohol;

—Reckless endangerment of roadway workers;

—Second-degree criminal trespass with a domestic violence component;

—Resisting arrest;

—Third-degree malicious mischief with a domestic violence component.

Both charges that carry domestic-violence designations are due to his alleged actions in trying to force entry into his in-laws' house in Redmond, Washington. There were a total of nine family members inside the house, according to the police report.

Nobody was significantly harmed in the incidents. Sherman was treated at a local hospital for dog bites when a police dog was deployed to assist in taking Sherman into custody.

A judge on Thursday found probable cause for four non-felony allegations. A fifth charge of reckless endangerment of roadway workers was added on Friday. Sherman allegedly wrecked his vehicle on a concrete barrier when he drove through a blocked-off construction zone on a freeway offramp.

Sherman was booked into jail Wednesday at 6:08 a.m. He was released at 5:42 p.m. on Thursday.

A judge declined the prosecution’s request to set $10,000 bail. Sherman was released without bail because this was his first arrest. Sherman was ordered to not have contact with his father-in-law, not use alcohol or nonprescription drugs and not possess a weapon.
