Source: 49ers plan to release Bruce Ellington

UPDATE (Friday at 1:15pm) -- Bruce Ellington is reportedly headed to the Big Apple.

The Jets claimed the wide receiver and kick/punt returner on Friday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

It appears that Bruce Ellington's time with the 49ers is coming to an end.

The club plans to release the wide receiver on Thursday, a source told NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.

The 49ers selected Ellington in the fourth round of the 2014 draft.

He missed the entire 2016 season because of a hamstring injury.

As a rookie, he returned 23 punts and 24 kickoffs.

In 2015, he returned 19 punts and 26 kickoffs.

He caught 19 passes for 215 yards with two interceptions while appearing in 26 games in 2014 and '15.
