Williams got 49ers pumped up with speech before Giants win

The 49ers entered their Week 3 game against the New York Giants nursing some serious wounds.

A dominant but costly Week 2 win against the New York Jets saw the 49ers lose Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas for the season, while Jimmy Garoppolo, Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman also suffered injuries and were out Sunday against the Giants.

But it's next man up in the NFL, and the 49ers, even without nine starters, still are a damn-good football team with a top-tier coach. There's no time to feel sorry for yourself in the NFL, not when Super Bowl dreams are on the line. Every Sunday is an opportunity for someone to step up.

That was All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams' message to the offensive and defensive lines prior to kickoff at MetLife Stadium.

"Every week, it comes down to this group, right?" a mic'd-up Williams said. "Last week, we dominated. But we lost two soldiers in the mix, man. We're replacing Nick with two first-rounders, man. What can you ask for? Come on. Hey, [Kentavius] Street, [Kevin Givens] it's your time. Replace them boys upfront. Make a name, bro. This is for everything you worked for!"

Williams' words and coach Kyle Shanahan's game plan did the trick as the 49ers walloped the Giants 36-9 to head back to the Bay at 2-1.

The 49ers got good contributions from Dion Jordan and Ziggy Ansah, the two former first-round draft picks mentioned by Williams and brought in to help compensate for the loss of Bosa.

Backup quarterback Nick Mullens was stellar, throwing for 343 yards and one touchdown while piloting a lethal offense that diced up the hapless Giants defense.

Depth is key in the NFL. The 49ers have been hit hard by the injury bug early in the season, but they have the talent and bodies to withstand the blows until Garoppolo, Mostert, Coleman, George Kittle, Richard Sherman and Deebo Samuel return.

The 49ers came into the season with Super Bowl aspirations, and nothing has changed. They'll be no hanging of heads in Santa Clara. It's clear Trent Williams won't allow that.
