Garcia happy to hand off 49ers No. 5 uniform to Lance

Now that we know he’s a member of the 49ers, No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft Trey Lance needed an official jersey number to prove it.

Lance decided to go with No. 5, the same number he rocked at North Dakota State.

The number once belonged to four-time Pro Bowl quarterback Jeff Garcia, but it appears he’s more than OK with handing it off to Lance.

Garcia wrote on Instagram that he wants Lance to make the number great and wants him to wear it with “grit, determination, motivation and pride.”

“Be a great giver in your communities and continue to touch the lives of others, that will be your lasting legacy,” Garcia wrote. “Demand perfection and strive for excellence, your will to succeed will inspire your teammates to be great, to be united, to be a brotherhood, and army on the field of battle on a mission to seek and destroy the enemy.”

Garcia, just like the rest of us, looks forward to watching Lance's journey, and Garcia said he’s blessed to be able to dust off the number and have Lance put it back into action.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan fell in love with Lance from the beginning. He looked at Lance’s film and noted the quarterback's natural ability to play at the position. Lance's running ability stood out to the 49ers' coach as well. The off-the-field elements had Shanahan comparing Lance to a “CEO of a company.”

We can see why Lance was the pick.

The 20-year-old had 17 college starts but did lead NDSU to an FCS national championship in 2019 when he threw 2,786 yards completing 66.9 percent of his passes with 28 touchdowns.

Garcia’s support is an added bonus as Lance looks to find his footing in the Bay Area.
