Washington discussed signing Colin Kaepernick but won't do it

For the second time in three weeks, Washington needs to add a quarterback to its roster after its starter suffered a season-ending injury.

But according to coach Jay Gruden, the team won't sign former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

"He's been talked about and discussed, but we will probably go a different direction," Gruden told the media in Washington on Tuesday.

Gruden labeled the discussion on Kaepernick as "strictly football" terms.

Back in 2016, Kaepernick started taking a knee during the national anthem to bring awareness to social injustices. His last game was on Jan. 1, 2017, a game in which the 49ers lost 25-23 to the Seahawks.

A little over two weeks ago, Washington signed free agent Mark Sanchez after Alex Smith broke his fibula and tibia against the Houston Texans. At the time, Washington brought in a large group of quarterbacks for a workout, but Kaepernick wasn't among them.

Smith's injury elevated Colt McCoy to the starter. But McCoy's season ended Monday night when he broke his fibula against the Philadelphia Eagles.

So that leaves Sanchez as the only healthy quarterback on Washington's roster.

The decision to pass on Kaepernick for football reasons comes one week after Washington claimed ex-49ers linebacker Reuben Foster off waivers roughly 48 hours after he was arrested on a domestic violence charge in Tampa, Fla.
