Why Mostert views 49ers tackle Williams as ‘one of a kind'

SANTA CLARA -- Trent Williams is set to make his official comeback in a few weeks and Raheem Mostert can’t wait.

The 49ers running back has been impressed by the athleticism of his new left tackle as much as his teammates have. Williams’ abilities directly affect how Mostert will be able to do his job and the difference was immediate.

“Trent is definitely one of the most athletic o-linemen I’ve ever seen,” Mostert said. “He gets to his blocks quick and he makes our decisions cutting easier. It’s truly a blessing having him out there.”

At 6-foot-5 and 320 pounds, Williams’ athleticism is unique and has been described as freakish by several of his teammates. The veteran left tackle has not relied on just his physical abilities since his return but has been diligently preparing for Week 1.

After nearly two years away from the field, Williams has admitted that his preparation has been less about knocking the rust off, but more about keeping his nerves in check. Mostert appreciates his teammate’s work ethic and humble nature.

“He’s definitely a guy who comes in and he knows his role and he’s trying to perfect his craft,” Mostert said. “That’s what you need when it comes to this offense and in general in football."

After several seasons known as a special teams stand-out, Mostert burst on to the scene in 2019. During the regular season he carried the ball 137 times for 772 yards and registered 14 catches for 180 yards and 10 total touchdowns.

But it was the NFC Championship game facing the Green Bay Packers that made the world take notice of Mostert carrying the ball 29 times for 220 yards and four trips to the end zone.

Coach Kyle Shanahan’s offensive scheme is very demanding on his O-linemen. If they are not all on the same page, the system can quickly go awry. Williams has the advantage of familiarity with Shanahan’s offense from their time together in Washington.

The 49ers running back corps will benefit from his presence on the offensive line which Mostert sees as unique.

“It’s just the way he moves out there,” Mostert said. “You don’t really see that from other O-linemen in league, so he’s definitely one of a kind.”
