OAKLAND -- A's All-Star third baseman Matt Chapman left Wednesday's game against the Mariners after two innings with left ankle soreness.
Chapman took an uncomfortable swing in the first inning before fouling out to first. He stayed in the game through the second inning before being replaced by Chad Pinder at third base, with Robbie Grossman entering the game in left field.
"It just stiffened up on my throw across the diamond (in the top of the first) and then when I took that swing in the box, it kind of just like caught, and then it didn't feel right," Chapman said after the game. "So it was more precautionary than anything. We're going to just see how it feels tomorrow and just day-to-day and go from there."

A's manager Bob Melvin also called it a day-to-day situation and suggested Chapman might be able to play Thursday in Minnesota.
"It just bothered him a little bit and you just don't want to mess around with it," Melvin said. "Try to nip it at the pass. It's day-to-day. We'll see how he feels tomorrow, but not something you want to mess around with."
Tuesday night, Chapman tripped over Pinder while making a running catch in shallow left field. He wasn't sure if that contributed to his soreness.
"I felt fine after, but with the adrenaline going and things like that, maybe you don't realize it until the next day. It could've (been a factor), but it's really hard to say. ... Playing every day, you're always going to have some aches and pains. You're a little more sore some days than others -- quick turnarounds or whatever it is -- but something kind of didn't feel right today so I got out of there and got some treatment on it. Hopefully, it will be good to go tomorrow."

Chapman, 26, has been on a tear since the All-Star break, going 9-for-16 with a home run, three doubles, seven RBI, and four runs scored. For the season, he is slashing .279/.363/.552 with 22 home runs and 59 RBI.
