The Athletics will honor the late Ray Fosse by wearing a commemorative patch for the entire 2022 regular season, the team announced Monday.

The tribute will be a part of Oakland’s home white jerseys this year. The A’s shared the news in a tweet featuring two photos of the former MLB catcher and broadcaster, closing out the message with a simple, heartfelt hashtag: “#ForRay.”

Fosse passed away in October at age 74 after a 16-year battle with cancer. He made his MLB debut in September 1967 with the Cleveland Indians and went on to become a two-time All-Star, two-time World Series champion and two-time Gold Glove award-winner.

Fosse won both of his World Series titles with the early-1970s Oakland dynasty after being traded to the A’s before the 1973 season, where he helped guide the A’s pitching staff to back-to-back championships in 1973 and 1974.

After 12 MLB seasons, Fosse went on to pursue a career in broadcasting. He served as the color analyst for the A’s radio and television broadcasts beginning in 1986 until his illness forced him to step away from the longtime role last summer. He won an Emmy Award for broadcasting in 2003 and was nominated for a Ford C. Frick award in 2004.

Fosse was enshrined in Oakland history forever when he was posthumously inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame last November. When A’s players don their home white jerseys this season, his legacy will continue to live on in Oakland Coliseum.

NBC Sports California and the A's will honor Ray Fosse throughout 2022, and the team plans to unveil their season-long tributes to the late broadcaster during their Opening Night game on April 18 when they host the Baltimore Orioles.
