A's No. 1 prospect Soderstrom selected to Futures Game

Athletics top prospect Tyler Soderstrom was bound to make his mark on the organization, and it didn’t take long to do so.

The 19-year-old has been named to MLB’s Futures Game roster, and it’s well deserved.

Each year, top minor league prospects compete as a part of the All-Star festivities.

The No. 26 overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft (the A’s first pick) has been putting up solid stats with High-A Stockton.

He’s slashing .315/.399/.575 with 57 hits, nine home runs and 40 RBI in 208 plate appearances.

Heading into spring training, Soderstrom's approach at the plate was to keep it simple, but there's nothing simple when it comes to the power his bat has. His .974 OPS clearly shows that, and he’s still growing into his body.

At Turlock High School across four years, Soderstrom hit for a .373 average and seven home runs. A’s director of player personnel Ed Sprague said last August that Soderstrom probably was the best hitter that he has seen Oakland take in a draft over his five years with the organization.

Soderstrom will be managed by MLB veteran LaTroy Hawkins with New York Yankees hitting coach Rachel Balkovec, who will become the first female coach in the history of the Futures Game.

The game will air on MLB Network on Sunday, July 11.
