Melvin explains what's working during A's winning streak

The Athletics pushed their winning streak to six with a 3-0 win over the Detroit Tigers at the Coliseum on Friday night.

Everything went right for the A's. Frankie Montas cruised through six innings, striking out seven, giving up only two hits and walking one. Matt Chapman’s solo home run continued his recent hot streak at the plate and Jed Lowrie had another multi-hit game, his sixth straight, which is a career-high.

A’s manager Bob Melvin couldn’t quite put his finger on one aspect of the game that was working in the latest resurgence.

“I think coming up with big hits where we weren’t doing that early on, and you know, the pitching has been a complete turnaround to this point, so it’s all starts with our starters,” Melvin said. “Our starters set the tone, they go out there, they give you your confidence, give you your mojo every day and now they’re kind of following each other and pushing each other and trying to better it. And our defense too, it’s really everything -- we didn’t do anything well for a while.”

The A’s started the season out 1-7, so the six-game winning streak has the team at .500 (7-7) and that's a big relief for the team.

The pitching staff looks solid after Sean Manaea’s strong outing on Thursday night where he struck out seven in six innings, and the offense had another quality night.

Perhaps “turnaround” isn’t the correct term. Perhaps the team simply is becoming the team they’re meant to be after a typical slow start some teams have.

Melvin did ultimately narrow it down to two things that have helped the A’s as of late.

“I would have to say the pitching and coming up with big hits now,” Melvin said.

That works.
