BERKELEY — Former California pitching coach Mike Neu is returning to the school as its new head coach.

Cal announced Wednesday that Neu will replace David Esquer. Esquer left last month to take over as head coach at Stanford.

Neu was pitching coach for the Golden Bears from 2012-15 before taking over the program at Pacific. He had a 40-65 record in two years with the Tigers.

Neu pitched 33 games in the majors with Oakland and the Marlins in 2003-04. He had a 0-0 record with a 3.72 ERA and one save.

In college, Neu helped Miami win the 1999 College World Series.
