A's catcher Sean Murphy underwent surgery on his left knee Thursday, the team announced. He is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.

The lateral meniscus debridement procedure was performed by Dr. Thomas Carter at the Gateway Surgical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. Murphy, 25, spent two stints on the Triple-A injured list this season with knee injuries but recovered to join the A's in September.

In 20 games, Murphy slashed .245/.333/.566 with four home runs and eight RBI. That followed an impressive Triple-A campaign where he hit .308/.386/.625 with 10 homers and 30 RBI in 31 contests.

MLB Pipeline ranks Murphy as the A's No. 3 prospect, behind only hard-throwing pitchers Jesús Luzardo and A.J. Puk. Murphy is expected to be Oakland's starting catcher next season, though Josh Phegley will likely return and get considerable playing time as well.

The A's originally selected Murphy out of Wright State University in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft.
