Pinder ‘dodged a bullet' without concussion after HBP

It was a scary sight Monday night when Athletics utility player Chad Pinder was hit in the back of his head during an at-bat against the Los Angeles Angels.

Pinder was quick to get up and walk off the field. He wasn’t put on concussion protocol, which was surprising given his history with concussions.

The utility man was seen taking grounders at the Coliseum prior to Wednesday’s game against the Angels.

“Obviously yesterday had some headaches, side of my head was swollen,” Pinder told The San Francisco Chronicle’s Matt Kawahara on Wednesday. “My ear, the swelling is going down so that’s been good. But definitely feeling better than I did yesterday and that night.”

Pinder also told Kawahara he was dealing with some headaches but didn’t have the same symptoms he had in the past with previous concussions.

“I definitely dodged a bullet there,” Pinder said.

A’s manager Bob Melvin said Pinder woke up with some grogginess the next morning, but that was the extent of it.

Melvin added Wednesday that Pinder might be able to come off the bench.

“He felt that much better again today,” Melvin said. “Still a little bit of lingering, soreness, but I think potentially in a limited role later on in the game if the trainers give a full go to me to be able to use him, then yeah. I have not heard that as of yet.”

Pinder already has had one trip to the Injured List this season, as he missed time after sustaining a left knee sprain in the first series of the year against the Houston Astros.

He currently is slashing .244/.298/.442 with 21 hits and nine RBI in 94 plate appearances.
