A's do not tender contract to reliever Blake Treinen amid roster moves

The A's decided not to tender a contract to 2018 All-Star reliever Blake Treinen, the team announced Monday at the non-tender deadline.

Treinen posted a career-worst 4.91 ERA and 1.619 WHIP in 2019, losing the closer role to Liam Hendriks in the process. This disappointing season was coming off a sensational All-Star selection in 2018, where he posted a 0.78 ERA and 100 strikeouts in 80.1 innings.

MLB Trade Rumors projected Treinen would be awarded $7.8 million in arbitration -- it appears that's not what the A's want to pay for.

In additional moves, the A's announced they have non-tendered left-handed pitcher Ryan Buchter and catcher Josh Phegley. Oakland also agreed to terms with left-handed pitcher T.J. McFarland on a one-year contract for the 2020 season, avoiding him of arbitration.

Treinen, Buchter and Phegley will now be free agents.
