There was a possibility the A’s might bring back outfielder Robbie Grossman, but instead, the free agent has signed a two-year contract with the Detroit Tigers, the team announced Tuesday night.
The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Cody Stavenhagen first reported news Tuesday of the two sides nearing an agreement, and reported, citing sources, that the contract is worth $10 million.
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale pointed out Grossman’s contract with the Tigers is the largest deal this offseason, which paints a pretty good picture of how we’re going to view this winter.

A potential reunion between the A’s and Grossman more than likely would have been on a one-year contract and Oakland's outfield situation already was crowded.
Grossman really stepped up in 2020, crediting an adjustment to his swing that he implemented during spring training. He was able to master it during quarantine at home in Texas.

Grossman originally signed with the A’s in February of 2019 for his “Moneyball-esque” characteristic to get on base. It essentially screamed a perfect fit in Oakland.
Last season, Grossman slashed .241/.344/.482 in 51 games with the A’s.
The A’s left field position currently has plenty of options. Mark Canha started 15 games in left field next season and could see an expanded role. Chad Pinder was brought back to the team on a one-year contract and his versatility proves he can play anywhere with success.

Ramón Laureano looks to have another impactful season in center field and Stephen Piscotty has right-field duties locked up. Canha has the ability to play all three outfield spots. Seth Brown also could fight for a role. He tends to heat up if given enough at bats.
Grossman looks to be the left field starter for the Tigers in 2021 ahead of Christin Stewart and Travis Demeritte.
