Former A's catcher Stephen Vogt holding a workout for interested teams

A's fans have believed in Stephen Vogt before, so the fact that he's currently holding a workout for interested teams could perk some ears up.

At the moment, these interested teams remain unknown, but bringing him back to Oakland doesn't seem like a crazy idea. Actually, it seems like the perfect fit ... again.

And here's why.

For starters, well -- the team doesn't have a starting catcher. It appears manager Bob Melvin's idea is to have both Josh Phegley and Chris Herrmann platoon at the position

For those of you who don't believe he will be the 2015-2016 All-Star selection-type he once was, perhaps you're right. Almost rarely does a situation occur where someone gets better with age  -- especially at the catcher's position that is extremely wearing on the body. And despite having shoulder surgery in May and missing the entire 2018 season, Vogt is making good progress. He did have a decent stint in 2017 with the Brewers and increased his power quite a bit.

In his six-year career, he spent five seasons with the A's where he slashed a .255/.316/.416 line with 49 homers.

With that said, if the A's were to acquire him, it could give Phegley a bit of a break. Yes, Phegley is looking forward to more playing time following a season where he only played in 39 games, but to give him that much exposure so quickly could be risky.

Having Phegley ease into a higher quantity of games may be the perfect way to have him develop confidence. And even having someone like Vogt, a phenomenal veteran presence on and off the field, can only make him a better player.

Vogt also shouldn't be expensive, and the current consensus is he would have to be open to a one-year deal since that's likely the only offer he'll get.

At the age of 34, the end of his career is looming but who knows -- perhaps he could have a very successful career as a coach. And with him spending the majority of his time with the A's, it seems like the perfect spot to end his chapter in baseball with the green and gold.

But hey ... he could still have plenty of gas in the tank and have us all fooled and go on to play for another 10 years.

After all, we believe in Stephen Vogt.
