Kyler Murray's agent doubles down on A's future; NFL scouts differ on QB

For the second time in recent days, Kyler Murray's baseball agent has made his client's future with the Oakland A's loud and clear.

"Kyler Murray is a baseball player, (and) is going to show up for spring training in February for the Oakland A's," Scott Boras told NFL Media's Ian Rapoport.

Boras essentially sent the same message to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle on Thursday.

“He could play in the NFL, certainly,” Boras said to Slusser. “But no one understands this guy’s future in major league baseball — he’s got an opportunity to separate himself from everyone. He’s got a chance to be a great major-leaguer.”

Murray, drafted by the A's with the No. 9 overall pick in June before signing a $4.66 million signing bonus, won the Heisman Trophy six months later Saturday. One day before the honor, the Oklahoma quarterback said he would "love to play football and baseball both professionally."

If Murray decides to also give the NFL a shot, it sounds like scouts have differing opinions on the electrifying quarterback who is favorably listed at just 5-foot-10.

NFL scouts tell Rapoport that Murray likely would be a Day 2 pick, in the second or third round of the draft. At the same time, ESPN's Adam Schefter heard from one NFL GM that the A's prospect is a first-round pick, and he can thank the quarterback he replaced at Oklahoma for that.

As for what Murray is saying about his future, it's not much, and that actually could speak volumes.

Underclassmen have until Jan. 14 to declare for the 2019 NFL Draft. Boras can continue to say Murray will fulfill his commitment to the A's, but the agent nor the actual athlete have put an official end to his future in football.
