A's Matt Chapman avoids concussion protocol after taking pitch to head

It was a scary sight Wednesday night at Kauffman Stadium as the Royals played host to A's. But there is good news.

After A's third baseman Matt Chapman took a 90.7-mph sinker to the helmet, he will not be forced to undergo concussion protocol.

"He's all right," manager Bob Melvin said after the A's 6-4 loss. "No concussion symptoms right now."

It ended up being a contusion to the head.

Melvin also added that Chapman was "a little blurry" after the hit, but the A’s will see how he is Thursday.

Chapman initially remained in the game, but he was pulled after lining out in the second inning. This more than likely was just a precaution, but the A’s are glad it wasn't anything worse.

"It's never good for anybody, especially one of the leaders," A's starter Tanner Roark told reporters after the game.

If he's not feeling better, Chapman does have some wiggle room on recovery time. While he's not necessarily replaceable, the A's will be calling up No. 8 prospect Sheldon Neuse, who’s currently killing the ball in Triple-A. And while he originally was on his way to the big league club to fill the spot of Khris Davis, who is out on paternity leave, Neuse also has played some third and second base.
