A's Olson wants to win another Gold Glove after 2020 snub

Matt Olson won Gold Gloves each of his first two full MLB seasons.

But the A's first baseman got snubbed in 2020.

“At the end of the day it’s not my decision, but I fully plan on having another one at some point,” Olson recently told NBC Sports California with a chuckle.

Olson is more into the team aspect of recognition and accomplishment, so the individual awards aren’t everything. But he still takes a lot of pride in his work and what comes with it.

“I’m a competitor. I want to go out and do the best I can,” Olson said. “The level of defense I played the year was not short of anything I played in the past.”

Olson also understands the award will reside in good hands [pun intended] up in Seattle.

“I don’t want to take anything away from Evan White (who won the award), he’s pretty spectacular over there,” said Olson.

What lies sourer with Olson is the 2020 season from an offensive perspective. He hit just .195 but also led the team in home runs and RBI.

“In my mind, it was a pretty awful year,” said Olson. “Sure, I ran into a few home runs, and I guess when I did, had guys on base to get some RBI."

“There wasn’t any consistency at the plate for me, I never felt good at any point. It was showing up to the field and grinding trying to get the swing right, every day,” said Olson.

Players across MLB this summer were hesitant to use their new restrictions or inability to continue routines as an excuse. But, it can’t be overlooked.

“Sometimes baseball is that way, and it was probably exacerbated by the short season,” Olson said. “Much as you don’t want something like that to affect you, I think it did a little bit.”
