Olson says A's aren't ‘pressing panic button' in rut

The Athletics' 8-3 loss to the Texas Rangers on Thursday was their eighth loss of their last 12 games. And while this rut is tough, first baseman Matt Olson said they’ve been through this before and there’s no reason to panic.

“I think throughout a year you go through these ups and downs, obviously, and we’re definitely not playing our best baseball right now, but at the same time, the same way we approached it at the beginning of the year, nobody’s hitting the panic button,” Olson told NBC Sports California’s Brodie Brazil on Friday.

A’s designated hitter Mitch Moreland mirrored those sentiments after the loss on Thursday, saying he knows the team could be more consistent, but the group of guys has been good all season and he also doesn’t believe there is anything to worry about.

Olson said the guys in the clubhouse know how good they are. An 0-6 start to the year by the A's followed shortly by winning 13-straight games proves just how long and winding an MLB season can be.

“We know the talent we have here,” Olson said. “The past few years we’ve been a second-half team. I think having done that, we have the confidence that we can hit a big run and do what we’ve done in the past.”

Olson makes a good point. The started slow the last three seasons, only to finish strong en route to the playoffs.

“Like I said, no panic,” Olson said.
