Oakland, Las Vegas mayors trade shots over A's future stadium

Things got heated this week between the mayors of Oakland and Las Vegas as the two cities hope to build a future ballpark for the Athletics.

Oakland mayor Libby Schaaf and Las Vegas mayor Carolyn G. Goodman traded verbal shots through the media and via Twitter over the last few days.

This all started Wednesday with comments from Mayor Schaaf on ABC 7 News when discussing the difficulties of building a stadium in Oakland.

“It's going to be more complicated and you’ve got to be much more environmentally focused when you are developing on the precious California coastline than in the gross desert of Las Vegas," Schaaf said. "So yes, it's more complicated and it's totally worth it."

Those remarks elicited a sharp response from Mayor Goodman, who defended her city and invited Mayor Schaaf to a Raiders game in Las Vegas.

Mayor Schaaf didn't back down, standing by her comment.

While the A's are trying to build a new ballpark at the Howard Terminal port, they still are exploring potential sites in Las Vegas, even submitting bids for parcels of land in Sin City.

The A's achieved a major milestone in their attempt to get the $12 billion Howard Terminal project completed when the Oakland City Council passed the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) in February.

As the two cities wait for the ballpark situation to get resolved, it's safe to expect the mayors to continue to exchange verbal jabs.
