The A's have agreed to terms with free agent reliever Ryan Madson on a three-year $22 million contract, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to CSN California.

The deal is pending a physical.

It continues a dramatic reconstruction of Oakland's bullpen after the unit posted the American League's worst ERA last season.

Madson, 35, was terrific in 2015 with Kansas City after a three-year layoff from the major leagues due to injuries. To get him, the A's shelled out significantly more than Madson was expected to command. The web site mlbtraderumors.com predicted him for a three-year $15 million deal, and a three-year commitment also carries some risk given his age and injury history.

The A's were targeting another late-inning arm after trading Drew Pomeranz to San Diego. Madson also brings closer experience from his days with Philadelphia, making him a fallback option for Sean Doolittle, who missed most of 2015 with shoulder problems.

What a makeover it's been for Oakland's bullpen since the offseason began. Gone is Pomeranz, Fernando Abad, Dan Otero and Pat Venditte. In are Madson, Liam Hendriks and lefty Marc Rzepczynski, the latter two acquired via trade.

The A's have yet to announce any signing.
