A’s infielder Tommy La Stella was removed from Wednesday’s game against the Houston Astros when he was hit by a pitch in his right elbow by Brooks Raley in the eighth inning.

La Stella fell to the ground and trainers ran out to check on him.

Nate Orf went in to pinch-run for La Stella and would eventually replace La Stella defensively at second base.

After the game, manager Bob Melvin said that La Stella has a right elbow contusion, and that X-rays showed there was no fracture.

La Stella is a very tough player, so the fact that he was removed goes to show he must have been really hurt.

The hit-by-pitch started the go-ahead rally for the A's, who took a late 9-7 lead they wouldn't relinquish in Game 3 of the American League Division Series.
