What unique superstition Bob Melvin does while managing A’s games

It turns out Bob Melvin is quite superstitious -- and has quite the sweet tooth as well.

In helping lead the A's to the AL Division Series, which starts Monday against the Houston Astros from Los Angeles, the A's manager has endured a bunch of tense moments that could use the benefit from some extra luck.

Their road to the ALDS didn't come without a lot of trials and tribulations along the way, including being down three runs in Thursday's winner-take-all wild-card game vs. the White Sox.

So Melvin, who explained how special this particular A’s team was after the win, has a specific mid-game superstition that he indulges in.

ESPN broadcaster Boog Sciambi was covering an A’s game on the radio and in chatting with Melvin, Sciambi and fellow ESPN analyst Chris Singleton asked if Melvin was superstitious.

“He tells me this,” Sciambi explained on the latest episode of Balk Talk. "Here’s my superstition, I eat a piece of candy before we hit in the first, the third, the fifth, the seventh and then the ninth, but in the ninth, the piece of candy has to be green.’”

“So he eats candy, before the bottom of the first, all three of these games, the first, the third, the seventh and the ninth, if they go into extras, he will run back up and get candy,” Sciambi said.
