Pre-MLB trade deadline power rankings for every major-league team

On Sunday, the market finally moved! Marcus Stroman, the competitive Blue Jays ace, was traded to ... the Mets? Huh?

Late July is silly season for MLB, and Sunday's big deal was a head-scratcher. Stroman may help the Mets next year, but they seem buried this year and have been shopping Noah Syndergaard and Zack Wheeler.

Over the next three days we'll find out what the plan is, and see which teams get that piece that will swing a race in August and September. It's the most exciting week of the summer, and it'll have a huge impact on the postseason chase. Before all the wheeling and dealing, here's a rundown of all 30 teams:

The Giants find themselves in an odd spot.

A surefire seller for much of the first half, they've gotten hot for two weeks and sit just 4 1/2 games out of the second Wild Card spot. A chunk of the National League is facing a similar decision. The Diamondbacks and Rockies are .500 teams but both are just 1 1/2 games from a playoff spot. The Pirates have been outscored by 48 runs but they're 3 1/2 out. The Reds are six games under .500, but have the same run differential as Wild Card leader Washington, and they're also just 4 1/2 out.

It's a strange time for a lot of NL executives who have to decide whether to buy or sell.

Our decisions here are easier. We simply have to rank the teams.

MLB power rankings 2019: Twins challenge Dodgers, Astros in standings

Those Minnesota Twins just aren't going to slow down, are they? A sneaky contender early on, the Twins have spent the last month neck-and-neck with the Dodgers and Astros. It's too early to consider them quite as dominant as those other two, but they're going to run away with the AL Central and have plenty of time to make a move or two to bolster a playoff run.

It's going to be tough regardless because the American League is LOADED. Four of the five best teams in the Majors by run differential are in the AL, and they show up in our top five, too.

Here's the latest rundown of all 30 teams, with an emphasis on some familiar names ...
