Bonds welcomes Pujols to 700 Home Run Club: ‘Well deserved'

Greatness recognizes greatness.

Shortly after St. Louis Cardinals great Albert Pujols blasted his way to history on Friday night in Los Angeles against the Dodgers, Giants legend Barry Bonds welcomed the fellow slugger to the 700 Home Run Club.

At age 42, Pujols became just the fourth player in MLB history to reach the milestone as he hit home runs Nos. 699 and 700 on Friday at Dodger Stadium. He joins Bonds (762), Hank Aaron (755) and Babe Ruth (714) as the only players on the exclusive list.

The Home Run King congratulated his friend with a pair of posts to his Instagram story, including a photo of the two on the field together, calling the accomplishment “well deserved.”

Pujols broke a different Bonds record in late August when he became the first player to homer off of 450 different pitchers, surpassing Bond’s previous tally of 459.

And when he made history again on Friday night in a big way, baseball fans and players everywhere -- including those on the Giants -- celebrated.

San Francisco infielders Brandon Crawford, Evan Longoria, Wilmer Flores and J.D. Davis couldn’t take their eyes off the scoreboard during a pitching change in their 6-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks when Chase Field took the opportunity to show Pujols’ 700th homer to the fans.

Whether they’re still on the field or long retired after illustrious careers of their own, it’s clear Giants players have the utmost respect for Pujols.
