Bruce Bochy on Giants' loss: ‘It's a shame' ninth inning ended that way

SAN DIEGO -- The scene was an odd one. Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner, his hat hanging off his head and a jacket wrapped around his massive shoulders, sprinted out of the dugout to get ready to pinch-hit with two outs in the ninth inning.

Bumgarner was the best option left on the bench, and you know he was ready to take his hacks once that jacket came off. But he never got his chance. Brandon Belt went down on a high called third strike and the Giants lost 4-1. Belt was livid.

Manager Bruce Bochy didn't need to watch a replay to know it was a ball.

"It's a shame," Bochy said. "You battle back like that -- it's a heck of a job battling back. You get the tying run on base and they get the bat taken out of their hands, there's no question. That's a tough way to go out tonight."

Gerardo Parra was called out on a low pitch one batter earlier. Like Belt, he ended his night yelling at home plate umpire Lance Barksdale.

Here are some other notes from a second straight loss at Petco ...

--- The Giants have proven to be offensively challenged through two games, so they're going to have to play near-perfect ball most nights to stay in games. Friday night's game wasn't a great one for fundamentals.

Steven Duggar had a leadoff double in the third but immediately got thrown out when he tried to take third on a grounder to short.

"That's just a baserunning mistake," Bochy said. "He's a young player but he's a smarter baserunner than that. It's early in the season and these guys are amped up ... (but) that's one we've got to stay away from."

There were other small issues. This was a terrible bunting team last year and Derek Holland struck out trying to advance a runner in that inning. A cutoff man was missed. Two tags at second base were late, although the Padres seemingly let the Giants off the hook by not challenging one. This team can't afford to give away that many outs.

--- We've seen Connor Joe make three throws, and the results haven't been great. He did get an outfield assist in the second inning but the ball skipped from left to second base, and you can tell the word is out already, because Manny Margot didn't hesitate to tag up from first. Margot might have actually been safe, but the Padres didn't challenge the tag for some reason.

The scouting report on Joe was that the arm isn't very good, but the Giants believe there are maybe some adjustments they can make since he's a converted infielder. Joe will have to prove that those two bounced throws were an aberration. Otherwise, teams are going to be running on him all year.

--- Travis Bergen made his MLB debut and got the final out of the sixth when Ian Kinsler bounced out. Overall, it's been two pretty good days for the bullpen.

--- The Padres set a franchise record for longest scoreless streak to start a season. The previous mark was 14 innings set in 2008.

--- Brandon Crawford has had some rough at-bats, but the guy is still as good as it gets defensively. Crawford went way out of position to snag an overthrown relay, spin and cut Ian Kinsler down at the plate. He made a somewhat difficult play in the eighth look easy, getting the super-speedy Fernando Tatis Jr. by a step on a soft grounder to short.
