Chris Davis breaks former Giant Eugenio Velez's hitless at-bats streak

Remember Eugenio Velez? Of course you do.

Diehard Giants fans know the name, but Orioles first baseman Chris Davis surely wishes he never had to hear it.

Going into Tuesday's slate of games, Davis is 0-for-28 to start the 2019 season. Dating back to 2018, it gets even worse. Historically worse.

Davis is now hitless in his last 49 at-bats, the longest streak in MLB history. How is he connected to Velez? The record of futility breaks the former Giants utility player's streak of 46-straight hitless at-bats.

Velez began his streak at the end of the 2010 season as a member of the Giants. He went hitless in his final nine at-bats that year and then continued the streak for 37 more at-bats in 2011 as a Dodger.

He never recorded a hit with the Dodgers and never made it back to the major leagues.

Velez last played in the majors in 2011, finishing the season 0-for-37. He hit .256 over four years as a Giant and made $1,210,000 in his major league career.

Davis, on the other hand, is making $23 million in this season alone. He signed a seven-year, $161 million contract with the Orioles before the 2016 season.

Since signing his megadeal, Davis has hit .199 with 621 strikeouts in 422 games.
