Roberts jokes ‘pressure's on' after Scully's Game 5 comments

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers are well aware what's at stake Thursday night at Oracle Park. Two rivals who both have won exactly 109 games this season will battle once more to keep playing or face a long offseason full of questions.

Managers Gabe Kapler and Dave Roberts have done what they can to keep their teams lose. Really, it took a tweet from a 93-year-old for Roberts to feel the heat in San Francisco.

Longtime Dodgers play-by-play broadcaster Vin Scully declared Game 5 of the National League Division Series the "most important game" in the history of this storied rivalry.

"Now I feel pressure," Roberts joked Thursday when told of the tweet. "Gosh darn it, Vin."

The history, the previous 23 matchups this year and so much more. These two squads have heard it all, and are doing their best to stay in the moment ahead of a game that will be discussed for decades.

But from Kapler and Roberts, to Evan Longoria and Gavin Lux, the Giants and Dodgers both recognized what this game means for their respective fan bases. And to hear what Scully had to say -- or tweet in this case -- the words hold a whole lot of significance.

"For Vin to say that, no one knows this rivalry better than he does, so it just gives you the gravity of this, what it means," Roberts said. "And it's bigger than just one game and that's what's beautiful about this rivalry, sports in general.

"So we're going to enjoy it, it's going to be a lot of fun."

Roberts' latest secret weapon in his deep pockets of talent to pick from summed it up perfectly.

"This has been a really fun series to be a part of," Lux, who will bat sixth and start in center field, said. "It's coming down to the wire. I think this is what everybody wants and it's going to be a lot of fun tonight."
