Leone named Giants' starting pitcher vs. Dodgers on Sunday

Dominic Leone

In Gabe Kapler's latest game of Pin The Tail On The Starting Pitcher, right-hander Dominic Leone will receive the ball Sunday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Giants essentially are dealing with a three-man rotation -- Logan Webb, Kevin Gausman and Anthony DeSclafani -- as Johnny Cueto is back on the 10-day injured list and Alex Wood is symptomatic with COVID-19.

Leone has never started a game in his eight-year MLB career. He started one game in Triple-A this season for the Sacramento River Cats, throwing two shut-out innings and striking out five. It was his only start in the minor leagues as well.

The 29-year-old veteran is 3-3 with a 1.63 ERA in 42 games this season.

The Giants' bullpen by committee strategy had mixed results in Saturday's 6-1 loss to the Dodgers. Starting pitcher Jay Jackson, who usually is a reliever, allowed three runs in the first inning while recording only one out.

Entering Sunday, the Giants and Dodgers are tied for first place in the NL West with an 86-50 record.
