The sun never came up in San Francisco on Wednesday morning. For a couple of weeks, the city has had a faint smell of smoke in the air due to fires in Northern California, but Wednesday was a completely different story. 

Dense smoke and ash gathered in the air and blocked out the sun all morning, hovering above the marine layer that is familiar to residents of the city. The air quality actually rated as moderate, but Giants officials were watching it as they have for several days. 

The Giants have not had to postpone any games or come close, although on Sunday players said the smoke got thicker at the ballpark during the day game. There was no immediate word Wednesday morning about the status of that night's game against the Mariners, but the scene at the ballpark certainly was not encouraging, and quite eerie.
