Sogard misses first base, helps Giants on bizarre play

Eric Sogard

The words, "What the hell was that?!?" come to mind.

What am I talking about? Well, just watch for yourself.

Chicago Cubs second baseman Eric Sogard led off the top of the sixth inning on Sunday against the Giants, and that's when all chaos ensued.

Sogard slapped a slider to a diving Wilmer Flores, but the ball ricocheted off his glove, right to shortstop Mauricio Dubon. Sogard appeared to be on pace to beat Dubon's throw to first baseman LaMonte Wade Jr. when Sogard then tripped (?), dove (?) and went completely over first base.

Somehow, Sogard got a TOOTBLAN running to first base. That has to be a new one.

Rule No. 1: You must touch the base.

In what wound up being a perfect 1-2-3 inning from left-hander Conner Menez, the Giants got plenty of help in the most bizarre way possible.
