SAN FRANCISCO -- Before the Giants' game against the Colorado Rockies on Thursday night, manager Gabe Kapler talked about how using 65 players this season is not only about "having" to use that many guys, but also about "wanting" to do it. Kapler mentioned young infielder Ford Proctor as the latest player who could potentially take advantage of an opportunity late in the year.

Proctor didn't wait long to make his mark.

The second baseman went the opposite way in the second inning at Oracle Park on Thursday night for a grand slam that was his first homer in the big leagues. Proctor, called up on the last road trip, couldn't hide his smile as he rounded the bases and excitedly greeted teammates when he returned to the dugout.

Proctor became the 16th Giant to have his first career homer be a grand slam. He is the first to do it since Kelby Tomlinson on Aug. 27, 2015, but not the only one in Thursday's starting lineup to pull off the feat. Brandon Crawford's first big league homer was a grand slam on May 27, 2011.

Proctor's slam gave the Giants a 5-0 lead over the Rockies. The Giants had loaded the bases on a single by Crawford and a pair of walks, and Austin Wynns had put them up 1-0 with an RBI single.
